Course Development Process

The course development process uses a systems approach such that the instructional designer engages a model of distance education that compares a course to a human body. Each body part plays a role in how the whole body works. Each member on the course development team has a role in this team approach (Puzziferro & Shelton, 2008).

Distance education is organized learning that happens at different locations and times from when the teaching occurs. This type of education requires specific course design and communication techniques requiring various technologies (M. Moore & Kearsley, 2005).

eLearning is the combination of formal and informal learning using Web technologies. Basically using the Web to learn.

Evaluation

An evaluation is a systemic process of determining quality of value (Scriven, 1991).

Formal learning is  structured learning where you would enroll in a course to either complete a degree and/or certification. Any type of classroom structured situation.

Informal learning

Informal learning is initiated by the learner and may involve Web technologies like blogs, videos, webinars, wikis, and social media. It can also include traditional learning through books, articles, journals, and lectures.

Instructional design is a systematic process of using instructional design principles to develop a plan of instruction that accounts for instructional materials, activities, resources, and assessments (Smith & Ragan, 2005).

Instructional design principles are a set of beliefs that underlie instructional design (Smith & Ragan, 2005).

Instructional Designers

Instructional designers are staff who design courses based on knowledge of instructional design processes, online instruction, an instructor’s vision, and the implementation of technology and multimedia (Brigance, 2011; Pan & Thompson, 2009).

Online Instructors 

Online instructors are faculty members who teach online courses by intentionally promoting learning through purposeful activities (Klein et al., 2004).

Quality is a measure of the meeting of requirements determined by various stakeholders (Endean et al., 2010).

Quality Matters (QM)

QM provides tools and training for quality assurance of online courses (Shattuck, 2012). The QM program was developed to evaluate online courses with the use of a rubric to measure the implementation of instructional design principles (Monroe, 2011).

TPACK is a framework that describes a teacher’s knowledge of technology required for the design, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum and instruction. TPACK comprises three knowledge components: technology, pedagogy, and content (Kereluik et al., 2011).
